1 year later: Monroe car bombing investigation

Posted: Updated:

Thursday marks the one year anniversary of the shocking car bombing in Monroe that injured local attorney Erik Chappell and his two sons.

Chappell spoke exclusively with 13 ABC this week saying he wants justice for his family.

ATF investigators say an arrest is not expected in the next few weeks calling this case a great whodunit.

One year later this is not where they expected to be in the investigation.

"Quite honest with you, I'm surprised," says Donald Dawkins with the ATF Detroit Field Division. "We thought we'd have it solved by now."

Dawkins has been on the Monroe car bombing case since the beginning.

It was a year ago today when a car driven by local attorney Erik Chappell exploded nearly killing Chappell and his two sons on their way to football practice.

ATF forensic experts determined that parts of a remote controlled toy car were used in the homemade bomb that someone remotely detonated.

Investigators identified several suspects but have not yet made any arrests.

"We've uncovered some things that it's a great whodunit," says Dawkins.  "We just have not received that last piece of that puzzle to close the case down."

Dawkins says the ATF mostly handles firearms and drug cases.  Car bombings targeting someone to kill are rare.

You can still see the markings on Elm Avenue where the car blew up. And the fact that whoever planted the bomb has not been caught haunts the Chappell family.

"That's the really I guess disgusting part that outside of targeting me that somebody would engage in this type of an act when the kids are in the car," says Chappell.

The kids Cole and Grant are lucky to be alive.  Grant spent ten days in the hospital and Cole wore a series of casts for months.

Their sense of security is rocked.

"It's something we're always aware of every day but There's nothing that we can see that would make us believe they're in danger right now," says Dawkins.

Dawkins has a message for whoever did this thinking they got away with attempted murder.

"I hope they're not resting easy because we're not. And we won't rest until we make an arrest," says Dawkins.

Investigators encourage anyone with tips in this case to call 1-888-ATF-BOMB.  The reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction is $20,000.
