The Toledo men's tennis team will start fall play this weekend when they travel to West Lafayette, IN for the Purdue Invitational. The Rockets are scheduled to compete Friday through Sunday (Sept. 21-23) against 12 teams, including Purdue, Marquette, Iowa, Depaul, Butler and Xavier.
"This weekend, we'll be getting our first look at what the guys did this summer," Head Coach Al Wermer said. "Most of them gained a lot of ground in experience and technical development."
Wermer enters his 17th season at the helm of the UT men's tennis program and has orchestrated at least 13 wins each year since 2005. Over that time span, the Rockets have finished top-three in the Mid-American Conference five times.
This year's team looks to improve upon a 15-12 record a year ago. The majority of the roster returns with seniors Terence Weigand and Bryant Dudzik leading the way. Junior Ben Brocker and sophomores Grant Adams, Garrett Cona, Roberto Meza, Tomas Stillman and Nick Wong also return as more experienced players. Stillman was named to the All-MAC first team after posting an overall record of 12-7 as UT's No. 1 singles player.
Freshmen Ryan Jorgensen and Matt Wareti will compete for playing time along with junior college transfer Francisco Stuardo.
Wermer expects the Rockets to improve this fall as they compete against solid competition.
"This group arrived more fit than any I've ever had," Wermer said. "It's allowed us to hit the ground running with our conditioning, and I think we'll see some good improvement in the fall."
