Police beefing up patrols at Fort Meigs Elementary

Posted: Updated:

Perrysburg police are looking for a man some elementary school students say tried to lure them with candy.

It happened after school earlier this week at Fort Meigs Elementary School on Fort Meigs Road.

Police say this was not an attempted abduction but they're taking extra precautions and urging parents to talk to their kids about stranger danger.

"Nobody tried to snatch anybody but we are concerned and we're looking," says Deputy Chief Michael Gilmore with the Perrysburg Police Division.

Perrysburg police are beefing up patrols around Fort Meigs Elementary School and nearby parks after a few third and fourth graders say a strange man approached them after school around 4 p.m. earlier this week.

"A guy did come out of an older car, walked towards where the kids were by the sidewalk, threw some candy at them," says Gilmore.

"The gentleman was either throwing candy at them or saying, 'Do you want some candy,'" says Scott Best, principal of Fort Meigs Elementary.

The kids were riding bikes, so they rode around the candy, away from the man, and went home to tell their parents.

"We definitely think it's unusual, his behavior and we would certainly like to talk to him," says Gilmore.

Police are looking for a white man in his 20s who was driving a gold-colored car and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

The principal of the school says employees are keeping an eye out, as well.

"Student safety is one of our top priorities and to help with that over the last few years we've reassigned teachers and other staff members to be outside before and after school," says Best.

Both the principal and police say parents should sit down with their kids and talk about stranger danger.

"Anytime anybody tries to approach a child that they're not familiar with they need to leave, get out of there and go to someone who they're familiar with," says Gilmore.
