The historic Lathrop House in Sylvania celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation by opening the house, which is still under restoration, to the public.
Dozens of residents took the opportunity to tour the basement of the Lathrop House were slaves took refuge.
This Sylvania home was built in 1853 and was used as a safe house as part of the underground railroad that led slaves to freedom.
Since the big move, the Metroparks have been working non-stop to preserve it. The basement walls hold the original stones.
The visitors listened to a reading of the emancipation proclamation in the basement; a place supporters call a sacred space.
It was just a one day open house. The group here hopes to have the basement fully completed and open to the public sometime in spring.
