The tropics are heating up across the globe

Posted: Updated:

The middle of September is the peak for hurricane season. While the Atlantic has been fairly quite, the globe is heating up with tropical activity. The strongest is Typhoon Jelawat. It is located in the Philippines Sea. Jelawat has a very well defined eye. As of Sunday morning the storm had sustained winds of 115 mph. The storm will strengthen over the warm waters in the next couple days. Sustained winds could reach 150 mph as the storm drifts towards the Philippine Islands.

Tropical Storm Miriam has popped up in the Pacific Ocean west of Mexico. This storm is expected to become a hurricane in the next 48 hours but it's track is towards the northwest which keeps it away from land.

The Atlantic Ocean is fairly calm, but a disturbance is expected to develop into a named storm in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is located 460 miles west-northwest of the Canary Islands. The disturbance is actually the remnants of post-tropical cyclone Nadine.
