Jail workers in Ohio county sue for pay, overtime

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio (AP) - Eleven current and former employees of a county jail in eastern Ohio are suing the sheriff and commissioners over for three years of back wages and overtime.

The Times Reporter in the Dover-New Philadelphia area reports the lawsuit naming Tuscarawas County Sheriff Walt Wilson says jail employees aren't paid for attending a required roll-call meeting in uniform 15 minutes before their shifts begin.

The meeting adds up to 2.5 hours to an 80-hour pay period, the suit says.

The newspaper reports the county doesn't dispute the mandatory meeting. It argues employees are compensated for meeting time because they're paid for 8 hours and have a 30-minute paid lunch.

1 of the employee plaintiffs said workers are expected to be on call during lunch.

If a tornado threatens, get into the basement. If you don't have a basement, a small, interior room in the lowest floor of your home is relatively safe. Avoid rooms with windows. Mobile homes are not safe in a tornado.
