Ohio schools graded on physical fitness

Posted: Updated:

The Ohio Board of Education is revamping the state report cards. Next year schools will assessed on how students perform in physical education.

This includes everything from knowing correct ways to exercise, understanding fitness games and determining if students are active both in and out of school.

The assessments are a  growing trend, 17 states now require physical education assessments.

But after budget shortfalls, many districts cut gym programs, offering students minimal exercise.

State education leaders say the new "grade" will encourage schools to push physical fitness--but it won't count toward a schools' overall performance rating.
