Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

A 44-count indictment was filed against former Fifth Third Bank employee Paulette Roberts.

Roberts, a loan officer and Vice President at Fifth Third Bank in Toledo is accused of falsifying documents and submitting them to bank officials to obtain credit approval for large commercial loans which otherwise would have been declined.

Roberts is also accused of soliciting and accepting gratuity payments from those borrowers and attempting to conceal those payments by creating a fake consulting business under which she charged borrowers for those services.

The indictment claims she used these funds to buy two vehicles, gold coins and other assets.  As a result of these loans, the bank suffered a loss of approximately $12 million.

According to a statement from Fifth Third Bank,  "We have cooperated fully with the government in the investigation of a former employee, however, as a matter of corporate policy, we do not comment on litigation."
