Obama speaks at BGSU

Posted: Updated:
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -

President Obama made his third speech in the Toledo/ Bowling green area just since July Wednesday.  He told 5,500 supporters he wants to grow the economy from the middle class out, not the top down.

"We don't think government can solve all of our problems.  But, we don't think it's the source of all of our problems either."

That was the President's theme today, but his solutions were government-oriented.  He insists that the eighty billion dollar tax payer auto bailout saved hundreds of thousands of jobs.  and, he rejected Mitt Romney's suggestion to just let Detroit automakers go through chapter 11 restructuring.

"So when he said that, I said no, I'm gonna bet on America.  I'm betting on American workers."

The President promised more government regulations to improve fuel standards and more government spending on renewable energies. He said more government money should go toward worker training and college tuition.

"No family should have to set an acceptance letter aside to a college like Bowling Green because they don't have the money."

The President bashed Mitt Romney, claiming the candidate would gut college tuitions, let oil companies write energy policy and turn the insurance companies loose to write healthcare laws.  And the President said Mitt Romney's tax cuts would not grow the economy.

"I refuse to ask middle class families to give up their deductions for owning a home, or looking after their kids, just to pay for another millionaire's tax cut. We're not gonna do that."

Dr. Melissa Miller says the President's trying to thread the needle on his anti-government theme.

"The Obama healthcare program is a step towards bigger government than we've had before.  The auto bailout is another example of that."
