Shooting a lesson for rookie officers

Toledo Police say the officer who shot a suspect during a struggle early Friday morning was a rookie. Now TPD is using the incident as a training tool.

Dozens of rookies are now on the streets of Toledo. Fresh out of training, they're supposed to be prepared  for whatever comes their way.

This morning,  police say a graduate from the November 2011 police class found himself face-to-face with a suspect. Police say Ben Cousino was being attacked by the suspect so he pulled out his gun--and shot the suspect.

Sgt. Cheryl Przyblysk said, "From what I am hearing he did revert back to his training and it did save his life basically, yes."

The officer's actions were a topic of discussion at the police academy this morning. This is Toledo's 60th police class. Today, the textbook lessons hit home for the 42 sitting in these seats.

These men and women have five more months of training to make sure they can handle situations like Friday's shooting.

Sgt. Prizbilski says she couldn't help but think of Keith Dressel today, a TPD officer shot and killed in the line of duty.

"Anytime an officer gets hurt we are all involved and we all feel that and we all try to analyze the situation to see what we could do better. When one of us gets hurt we feel like we're all hurt."

Today the police force is relieved that this officer used his training--which they believed may have save his life.

Chief Derrick Diggs tells us Officer Cousino was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.
