DEA Drug Take Back Day

Posted: Updated:

Agencies across the country are collecting prescription drugs today.

Wood County Sheriff Mark Washylyshyn is calling on all residents to clean out their cabinets.  Its part of the annual Drug Enforcement Agency Drug Take Back Day.  On Saturday, law enforcement agencies across the country will try to curb prescription drug abuse.

"What we found are a lot of people end up with a lot of excess prescription medication," Sheriff Washylyshyn said. "We don't want them flushing them down the toilet or holding onto them.  So, we'll accept them and destroy them."

Wood County has taken part in the push for 5 years.  That's because prescription addiction and abuse is now what many experts call a national epidemic that Washylyshyn says is hitting close to home.

"We have found many of our burglaries and other thefts are directly tied to illegal drug abuse," he said.

The effort goes beyond planned drop off events.  At the Wood County Sheriff's Office, you can drop off prescription pills 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In years past, drug take back days have raked in 1.6 million pounds of prescription pills.  The hops is that more people will take advantage of the opportunity and help prevent drug use, overdose deaths, and addiction.

Saturday September 29, 2012 people can drop off their old  medications at the Wood County Hospital or Wood County Sheriff's Office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
