TOLEDO, Ohio -
Once again this year, thousands filled the streets of Downtown Toledo for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to fight breast cancer.
Each step supports breast cancer survivors, raises money in the search for a cure and celebrates life.
The Race for the Cure is a signature event of Northwest Ohio. Organizers say this race grows larger each and every year.
Race Chair Kelly Keefer said, "Everything that is raised here in Toledo, 75 % of it stays here in Northwest Ohio and it goes right back into the community funding breast exams and helping those that need it. And the other 25% goes to research. Nothing is used for operations.
This year's race was in memory of 13abc reporter Lissa Guyton's sister who lost her fight against the disease last year. Margaret Guyton Stout was best known to her friends and family by her nickname Lambie.
Hundreds of family and friends remembered Lambie's Legacy-- running in her memory this year.
It's that same support that helps others cross the finish line.
Breast cancer survivor Sue Emery says, "This is my team, my family, my friends, everybody comes to join me every year. Every year we get more and more people to come with us. It's all about awareness, you have to know about it to learn the disease. To prevent it and keep going on."
Fellow survivor Yvette Biggs agrees, "It feels wonderful. Great support team and it's just nice to know that there are other people fighting for the cause. What a struggle! What a journey! To everyone with breast cancer, fight like a girl, you bet ya!"
Preparations are already underway for next year's race.
