A Mitt Romney ad attacking President Obama over his policies toward China ignore progress in relations.

We're holding the candidates accountable for what's in their campaign ads but putting those spots through our Truth Test.   Submitted in this episode an Obama ad concerning trade with China and a comment made by Mitt Romney in his book, "No Apologies."

The Obama ad is misleading for leaving out a comment by Mitt Romney which would have clarified the republican's position.

Here's the Ad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaqphainf_a

"Tough on China?  Not Mitt Romney."

This ad regards the touchy issue of trade with China.

The president saw 5,000 American tire workers losing their jobs because of surge of cheap Chinese imports and decided to impose a higher tariff to protect American jobs.

Mitt Romney criticized the move but the ad takes Romney's comment out of context by pulling this quote... "standing up to China was bad for the nation and our workers."

What Romney actually wrote on page 119 of his book was....

"President Obama's action to defend American tire companies from foreign competition may make good politics by repaying unions for their support of his campaign, but it is decidedly bad for the nation and our workers. Protectionism stifles productivity."

Romney charges the president imposed the tariff as a pay-off to the United Steelworkers Union which filed a trade complaint.

Romney says protecting American companies by imposing higher import tariffs is bad for business because, without competition, there's no move toward efficiency and innovation.  And Romney argues high tariffs on imports simply raise the price of tires on consumers.

Chinese representatives *also* called the president's move *protectionism*.

"How can mitt Romney take on the cheaters if he's taking their side?"

Some US tire companies have shifted to producing higher priced tires to make higher profits.
They have outsourced low-cost tires to cheap labor countries like China.
That's the perspective on the story, but the Obama ad takes Romney's comments out of context and that's misleading.
