People who raised money to help a woman accused of faking cancer are feeling betrayed but still want to help those in real need.
Police say she faked cancer to get cash! Kimberlie Gustwiller is facing a felony theft charge after investigators say she made up a story about having Stage IV cancer and stole money raised on her behalf.
Donning a pink Mohawk, Gustwiller appeared before a judge in Bowling Green. Visibly shaking, Gustwiller said she couldn't afford an attorney and pleaded to leave jail.
Police say the single mother of five claimed to have Stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. But, after multiple tips, police discovered her illness was a lie.
Residents in McComb and North Baltimore rallied around Gustwiller after hearing about her disease. Last month, two salons held fundraisers, cutting Mohawks and dying supporters' hair pink for cancer awareness.
Now residents are out thousands of dollars and left with feelings of betrayal. Police say they have recovered some of the money, but it's still unclear why Gustwiller made up the story or where the money went.
Gustwiller is free on bond. She is expected to be back in court in BG next Monday. If you have donated to her cancer fund, you are asked to call North Baltimore police.
