EVENING NEWS HEADLINES - OCTOBER 1, 2012

NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. ADMIRALS CLOSED

A restaurant at the Docks in East Toledo has closed its doors. The owner says it's the result of a legal dispute. The manager at Admiral's American Girl says the restaurant was forced to close today because its landlord, Dashing Pacific, breached the contract. He says all employees and vendors are paid in full but cannot discuss the situation further because of the pending litigation. No word on when the restaurant will reopen.

2. WIND FARM DEAL

A Northwest Ohio wind farm will soon supply power to Ohio State University. The school signed an agreement with Blue Creek Wind Farm in Van Wert and Paulding counties. The wind farm is expected to potentially provide up to 25 percent of the Columbus campus' electrical needs. The university says it's a 20-year purchase, making it one of the country's largest non-utility purchases of wind power.

NEW STATE NEWS

3. EARLY VOTING

(AP) - Ohio's elections chief says he's confident the presidential battleground state is prepared for the start of early voting tomorrow. Ohioans can cast an early ballot by mail or in person for the November 6th election without having to give a reason. About 30 percent of Ohio's total vote - or roughly 1.7 million ballots - came in ahead of Election Day in 2008.

4. PROBLEM GAMBLERS

(AP) - A new survey finds that about 3 percent of Ohio adults are either problem gamblers or at risk of gambling problems as casinos open around the state. The phone poll released today will be used as a baseline to target prevention and treatment dollars from casino revenues in coming years.

NEW NATIONAL NEWS

5. TAX BITE LOOMS

(AP) - A typical middle-income American family could be looking at a 27 percent increase in federal tax payments next year. That's among the calculations today from the Tax Policy Center, which looked at the possible impact if all of the tax cuts that are supposed to expire at year's end are allowed to do so. Almost 90 percent of all households would face a tax increase, though the top 20 percent of earners would bear 60 percent of the overall cost.

6. LOOSE AIRPLANE SEATS

(AP) - American Airlines says it will inspect eight planes after loose seats were found on two different planes in the last three days. A spokeswoman says there could be a problem with the way certain seats fit into tracking on the floor of the Boeing 757s. One of the aircraft had to make an emergency landing Saturday in New York after three seats came loose shortly after takeoff.
