MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Cleanup crews are finding unexpectedly high levels of the now-banned insulating chemicals known as PCBs in the Raisin River near the Port of Monroe.
The Monroe Evening News says the high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls were found during dredging at a site that underwent a partial cleanup in 2007.
PCBs once were a widely used insulator and fire retardant but have been linked to cancer.
The current dredging has found PCB readings of up to 10,000 parts per billion. Sampling began last week and is scheduled to conclude this week.
The work is part of a $13.7 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-backed effort to clear pollution sediment from the waterway and get its removed from a federal list of some of the most contaminated areas of the Great Lakes.
