The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is giving out $8,000,000 in grants to three universities and nonprofit groups, including the University of Toledo. This money is to go towards scientific research for preventing exotic species invasions in the Great Lakes.
The money will be divided into 21 grants, and will also projects aimed at prevention and early detection and controlling current species invasions, like the Asian Carp. U.T. is getting some of this money to refine techniques that signal the presence of foreign fish and other organisms.
Michigan State and Notre Dame will also be getting some of these grants.
Asian Carp DNA has been recently found by Lake Michigan near Chicago and in Lake Erie.
