Two lunch aides save little girl's life

Posted: Updated:

Kate Schmus was making her rounds at Temperance Road Elementary, when she saw a kindergartner throw up.  It was only the second week of school, but previous training kicked into gear.

"She had this look on her face and she was kind of coughing," says Schmus.  "I realized she was choking."

Kate didn't waste a second. She hit the little girl's back several times to try to dislodge the food.  Just as the small student was about to pass out, another aide named Nancy Brancheau stepped up to lend a hand.

"She just had this panicked look on her face and I thought 'Oh gosh! I've got to do something'," said Brancheau.

Bedford district officials say each school employee is required to learn moves like the Heimlich, but credit the aides for their swift actions.

"Those two ladies were in a position where they focused, knew what to do and they acted," said Bedford School Board president, Michael Smith. "They saved a little girl's life.'

Nancy and Kate strongly suggest CPR and first aide training to anyone who works with kids.  They never thought they would have to use it, but it ended up saving a life.

"Anything could happen at any time," comments Brancheau. "So it's a good skill to have."
