The Bowling Green State University volleyball team remained the only undefeated team in the Mid-American Conference, sweeping Miami 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 Thursday night. The Falcons improved to 5-0 in conference play with the win.
Bowling Green's defense sparked the Falcons to the team's fourth sweep in five conference matches behind 13.0 blocks (11 more than Miami) and a 43-32 edge in digs. Kaitlyn Skinner and Leah Shaw was dominant at the net, posting seven and six blocks, respectively. Libero Ashley Dunn led the Falcons with 13 digs, while Laura Avila added nine and Libby Dachenhaus posted seven.
Not to be outdone, the BGSU offense was efficient as well. The Falcons had 13 more kills than Miami and hit at a .348 clip, the team's best percentage of the year. Danielle Tonyan had a match-high 14 kills, while Paige Penrod followed with 12. Shaw added seven kills and hit .500.
Bowling Green took control early and never relinquished that advantage. The Falcons jumped out to a 23-11 lead in the first set before getting a bit sloppy. Miami closed on a 7-2 run but it was never enough to make a serious rally as BGSU won 25-18.
In the second set, Tonyan and Shaw combined for eight kills without an error on 11 swings as the Falcons pulled away late. Miami led 17-16 after a service ace but BGSU finished with a 9-1 run for another 25-18 victory.
In the final set, Bowling Green led 15-14 before getting kills from Avila and Skinner, followed by a block from Penrod and Skinner. After a Miami point made it 18-15, Penrod and Tonyan combined for five kills on the next nine points as the Falcons rolled 25-17.
Miami falls to 5-13 overall and 0-5 in MAC play with the loss. Bowling Green improves to 9-7 overall and remains the only unbeaten team in the MAC at 5-0. The Falcons will face a strong Western Michigan squad Saturday at 7 p.m. looking to extend their winning streak. The Broncos are 11-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play and were picked to win the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll.
