UTMC pioneers technology to prevent mishaps

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

The 13abc I-team is giving you a first look at what's being done to try to prevent another organ mishap like we saw at the University of Toledo Medical Center in August.  That's when a viable kidney was thrown away after a lack of communication when one nurse returned from a lunch break.

Now UTMC is pioneering technology to make sure it does not happen again.

It's technology that researchers at UTMC started developing as soon as school officials realized what happened on that day and tried to figure out how to prevent it from happening again.  all in their pursuit of improve patient safety, and improving communication.

There are two alarms that go off in the operating room when a kidney or any organ is being disturbed.  The first alarm is a motion sensor for when someone gets close to this slush machine where the organ is kept.  Another alarm is sounded when the lid is lifted off.  All this to alert the surgical team that someone is close to the organ.

If someone tries to unplug the slush machine and move it from the room, yet another alarm sounds.  It's technology that engineers right at UTMC are creating in the hope that the tragedy that happened here never happens again.

"In this particular instance what we identified was an opportunity to really improve the safety of health care for all solid organ transplantation not just here in Toledo but across the country and around the world," said Doctor Jeffrey Gold, with UTMC.

The university has also stepped up its training of communication and the "hand off" of care with a new training video.  They're also working with new technology like a virtual operating room to give students hands on experience in an operating room.

All of the work you see is part of Virtual Immersive Reality center.  UTMC officials puts around 2000 or 3000 people through the center every month.

UT officials say they hope to one day hold a national conference surrounding this incident to teach hospital staff members how to deal with adverse events.
