Toledo Police say a motorcycle officer was assaulted while issuing a traffic citation Friday afternoon.
According to a release from Investigative Services, an officer patrolling near Monroe & Auburn stopped 58-year-old Edward Wechtel for a red light violation near the intersection.
Once the officer issued the citation, Wechtel pulled away squealing his tires as he accelerated. The officer, along with a second motorcycle officer felt Wechtel's rate of speed was unsafe for traffic conditions and followed him.
As they closed in on the speeding vehicle, the suspect suddenly slammed on his brakes causing one officer to narrowly miss the vehicle. The second officer could not avoid striking the rear of the vehicle because it was blocking the entire lane. He struck the rear of the vehicle and suffered facial and other injuries.
Wechtel was uninjured. He was taken into custody and confessed to intentionally causing the officer to collide with the rear of his vehicle.
His bond was set Saturday at $100,000. He will have a preliminary hearing October 15th.
