Falcons Prepare for Weekend Invite in Toledo

Posted: Updated:

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio The Bowling Green State University tennis team heads to the Glass City this weekend, participating in the Toledo Rocket Hidden Duals.  The two-day, four-team tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13) at the University of Toledo Varsity Courts.

The University of Detroit Mercy and Duquesne University will join the Falcons and host Toledo in the event.  Matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

The invite will utilize a hidden dual format, as players will be grouped into A (flights 1 through 3) and B (flights 4 through 6) singles brackets.  Throughout the course of the two days, BGSU will compete against each of the other three schools in both singles and doubles.

The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean are looking to build upon the team's success at the first two tournaments of the 2012-13 season.  BGSU's eight players have combined to go 22-12 in singles action and 15-4 in doubles play this year to date.

While dual-match scores will not be kept at this weekend's event, a point system will be utilized. The team winning at least two of the matches in any of the competitions will earn a point.  Additionally, flight champions will be recognized at all six singles positions as well as each of the three doubles flights.

BGSU's schedule for the tournament is as follows...

This weekend's invite will be the Falcons' third of the young season. Four of the eight players on the roster began the fall at the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational in Dublin, Ohio, from Sept. 14-16.  Juniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland advanced all the way to the championship match of the doubles bracket at that event, and Reuland won her way to the semifinal round of the 35-player singles bracket before losing to the event's top-seeded player.  Freshman Katie Brozovich and senior co-captain Maddy Eccleston won six and four overall matches, respectively, that weekend.

Then, the Falcons captured a total of four titles at the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 21-22).  Reuland and Chiricosta won championships at the first and second singles flights, respectively, and that duo combined to win the championship at the top doubles flight.  Brozovich and senior co-captain Mary Hill teamed up to win the fourth-flight doubles crown.  On the weekend, BGSU competitors combined for an overall record of 21-7, including an 11-6 singles record and a stellar 10-1 doubles mark, at the event.

The two juniors on the roster rank 1-2 on the Falcons in wins, as Reuland has a 12-2 record and Chiricosta an 11-2 overall mark this fall.  Brozovich also has hit double digits in victories, with a 10-5 ledger in her first semester at BG.  Click here for some additional notes on each of the Falcon tennis student-athletes.

In addition to this season's success to date, the Falcons are looking to continue the success the team has had at the UT invite in each of the past few years.  BG captured three singles flight championships and a pair of doubles crowns at last year's event in Toledo.  Eccleston, Reuland and Katie Grubb each won singles titles at the 2011 Toledo Rocket Hidden Duals.  In doubles action, Dean rotated her teams throughout the two days in Toledo last year.  Grubb and Reuland teamed up to go a perfect 3-0 while playing at both the second and third flights.  Hill also was unbeaten in doubles action on the weekend, teaming up with Chiricosta for two matches at the second flight and pairing with Jessica Easdale, a senior on last year's team, for one third-flight contest.

Two years ago, the Falcons posted the highest point total of any of the five schools at the Toledo Invite.  BG had nine points, followed by UT (8), Cleveland State (4), Duquesne (3) and Detroit (0).

Following this weekend's event in Toledo, the 2012-13 edition of the Falcons will close the fall portion of the schedule with a trip to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Western Michigan University Super Challenge.  That event will be held from Nov. 9-11.
