One day after the round-up of known gang members, Toledo Police are sending a message: Gangs will not be tolerated.
"(If) your gang is being identified in the violence that we target, everyone involved in that gang is going to feel the pressure of the Toledo Police Department,"said Toledo police Captain Brad Weis.
He contends Toledo's zero-tolerance policy is sending a clear message to gang members, that hanging with the wrong crowd could land you behind bars.
"We know that the violence, the majority of it in Toledo, is caused by gangs," Cpt. Weis added.
Wednesday, Toledo police and federal agents announced the arrests of 11 members of the so-called Bee Hive Gang. That came after a year-and-a-half long investigation involving federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
The Bee Hive Gang has been in the news before. Police say a known member was shot and killed in the 300 block of Islington in April of 2010.
Toledo police say the Bee Hive Gang is only one of roughly 20 major gangs in the city. Officers are tracking them all in a database and on the streets with the help of the feds.
"The message should get out," said Cpt. Weis, "we're going to go after you and you may not be serving your time right here in Toledo. You may be serving across the country."
Police tell us the gang problem in Toledo is not out of control yet. That's why they're trying to stay ahead of it.
Two months ago, 13abc reported a round up of the Smith Park Gang. Detectives say they're already working on their next gang-related case.
