African American Legacy Project is moving

TOLEDO, Ohio -

The African American Legacy Project has been located on Upton Avenue for 8 years. The facility is around 1,500 square feet.  Inside, each wall, nook and cranny is being used to showcase Toledo's rich history.

It's no secret the AALP has been busting at the seams for a while. Robert Smith is the Founder. He tells 13abc,  "During our annual fundraiser, the President of the Ascension Lutheran Church stepped forward and offered us the deed to the property...this was pretty big for us."

Ascension Lutheran Church is located on Collingwood and Dorr. Smith expects to have the keys in his hands on November first. He tells 13abc, "It's an aging congregation and very small...that we would allow them to worship and use the sanctuary...I say not only use..but we stand on their shoulders all the work they did to put that in place...we don't think the community should forget."

Now the African American Legacy Project will be located in the heart of the community, less than a mile away from the Toledo Museum of Art and downtown Toledo. Smith tells 13abc, "We think we are perfectly positioned to begin this renaissance and those are the kind of discussions we've been having," Smith says the next step is to find an architect who can help turn this church building into an historic museum for everyone in our community to enjoy.
