BOWLING GREEN - Kelly DeNiro scored a goal in each half, lifting the University of Akron to a 2-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
Ashley Hughes assisted on both goals for the Zips (5-10-0, 1-7-0 MAC), while Alex Luevano-Harden and Klaire Adee combined to make 10 saves on the day. Each UA 'keeper played one half of the match.
The Falcons (1-14-1, 0-7-1) had healthy advantages in both shots and shots on goal, but had difficulty generating many dangerous scoring opportunities. The Brown and Orange had 20 total shots to the Zips' six, and BG had an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
Much of the match was played under rainy conditions, but the rain stayed away long enough for the 'Senior Day' festivities to be completed. The Falcons' four seniors -- Becca Ison, Leah Johnson, Emily Rothwell and Sarah VonderBrink -- were recognized in ceremonies prior to the match, and all four played at least 45 minutes of the game.
The Falcons take to the road for a pair of matches next weekend, facing Ball State on Friday (Oct. 19). The Brown and Orange then will take on Miami in Sunday (Oct. 21) action, before concluding the regular season at home vs. Central Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 25.
