TOLEDO - The Rocket Invitational concluded this weekend as freshman Emily Mazzola and senior Silvia Carvajal led Toledo with perfect records in singles play. The two-day invitational included teams from Bowling Green, Detroit and Duquesne.
"We had a great team effort the entire weekend," Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. "We were down a couple times and had a great comeback in doubles against Duquesne. There were also great individual performances from Silvia and Emily."
Mazzola, a true freshman, went 3-0 in singles play with two wins on Friday and another on Saturday. She notched victories over Bowling Green's Katie Grubb (6-3, 6-4), Detroit's Raina Halabi (6-3, 7-5) and Duquesne's Alrissa Tobe (6-3, 6-2). Mazzola teamed up with Mackenzie Bowman for a doubles victory over Duquesne as well.
Silvia Carvajal also went undefeated with two singles wins. Toledo's lone senior beat Duquesne's Chandler Consonery (6-4, 6-4) and Detroit's Chloe Karoub (6-1, 6-2). Her scheduled singles match against Bowling Green's Mary Hill was halted due to rain.
"Silvia and Emily continue to improve each time they get on the court," said Mauntler. "I still believe we have not even scratched the surface of our talent yet. We have a ton of potential and will keep getting better."
The Rockets now have 32 wins over three fall tournaments and will compete in the Midwest ITA Regionals on Thursday, Oct. 18.
