Oregon prosecutor on Cameo Pettaway case

Posted: Updated:

An Oregon woman who was seriously beaten by her boyfriend wants to drop the charges. Her boyfriend, Cameo Pettaway, was acquitted of murder in a double homicide in Springfield Township. Tonight the lead prosecutor says the case will go forward.

Pettaway's girlfriend identified him as the person who beat her up.

Dispatcher: What's his name?
Caller: Cameo Pettaway
Dispatcher: Cameo Pettaway
Caller: Yes
Dispatcher: What's he wearing?
Caller: He's in my bed right now sleeping
Dispatcher: So he's sleeping.

Dispatcher you need medical? Ok
Caller: Yes I need medical

Pettaway was arrested and charged with felonious assault, but now his 26-year old girlfriend wants the prosecutor to drop all the charges. Oregon prosecutor Tom Dugan says the charges are serious.

"The victim is only a witness. It is still up to the State of Ohio to proceed against the individual if they feel is warranted," said Prosecutor Tom Dugan

Officers were called out to the 900 block of Mambrino Sunday morning. Pettaway allegedly punching his girlfriend in the face after the got into an argument.

Yesterday Pettaway faced a judge by video arraignment with his attorney by his side.

It appears the state may have enough evidence to try the case. According to a police report the woman suffered "significant facial swelling and sore ribs." She was taken to Mercy St Charles Hospital. Officers took four digital photos of the victim's injuries.

"In murder cases the victim doesn't testify and in this case even if she doesn't want to testify we have sufficient other evidence to prove upon reasonable doubt that he did these things then we will proceed on it," said Prosecutor Dugan.

Pettaway is locked up in the Lucas County jail.
