The Toledo women's basketball program is well represented with three players being selected to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Team. Junior G Andola Dortch has been named to the first team, senior C Yolanda Richardson was chosen to the second team and newcomer G Kendyl Nunn was picked as the MAC Freshman of the Year.
A 2011-12 second-team All-MAC honoree, Dortch enjoyed a fantastic sophomore campaign and became the first Rocket to garner MAC Defensive Player of the Year accolades in school history. She averaged a team-high 13.6 points, a squad-best 4.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds and a team-high 2.0 steals in 33.3 minutes per game. The 5-foot-7 guard started all 34 games and ranked third in the MAC in assists (43rd in NCAA), fifth in three-point field-goal percentage (36.8%, 35-of-95) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2), sixth in scoring and tied for seventh in steals. The Akron, OH native scored at least 20 points a team-tying best five times and led the squad in helpers a team-high 20 times, thefts a squad-best 18 times, scoring a team-high 12 times and rebounding on four occasions.
A 2011-12 second-team All-MAC selection, Richardson contributed 10.3 points, a team-high 6.7 rebounds, a league-best 2.1 blocks and 1.5 assists in 24.2 minutes per contest. The Toledo native finished first in the MAC in overall field-goal percentage (62.4%, 161-of-258) and blocked shots (36th in NCAA), 11th in overall rebounding and 21st in scoring. The 2012-13 co-captain scored in double figures on 19 occasions and grabbed at least seven boards 17 times, totaling a team-high five double-doubles.
A 2012 graduate of Morgan Park High School in Calumet City, IL, Nunn averaged 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a senior. For her efforts, Nunn received Chicago Tribune special mention all-state and IBCA first-team all-state Class 3A/4A accolades. A four-star recruit according to ESPN.com, Nunn helped lead the Mustangs to a 22-9 overall ledger, including a perfect 8-0 mark in the league.
The Rockets open their season on Sunday, Nov. 4 against Wayne State in their lone exhibition contest. The opening tip is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
