Tuesday night was terrifying for families, especially the kids, who live at the Eastpointe Apartment Complex in Lake Township.
Police Chief Mark Hummer says it was not a random shooting. The motive appears to be an alleged love triangle.
However, neighbors can't help but worry about the safety of their children.
"It was very scary out here," says Dawn Short.
"The guy was screaming, 'I'm going to shoot you for messing with my wife and son,'" says Jennifer Maenlen.
"I was putting my daughter to bed so I didn't hear anything until the rifle went off," says Ashley Zerby.
These moms are in shock after Tuesday night's shooting rampage ended with a 3-year-old boy and his parents dead and three others injured.
"We live out in this area so we get away from all that stuff," says Zerby. "That's why I never wanted to live in Toledo. And then something like this happens out here."
Eastpointe is a neighborhood home to a lot of young families with front porches all decked out for Halloween.
"We just heard gun shots and then my sons ran downstairs to go outside," says Short. "The cops were like, 'Get in the house.'"
Mark Keil got home from work minutes before the madness.
"Went inside, turned on the debate, couple minutes later it sounded like firecrackers," says Keil.
Maenlen says her 8-year-old son is traumatized.
"I couldn't go to sleep last night and the conversations at the bus stop with the kids, it was scary," says Maenlen.
The police chief says what happened back in this unit is tragic not only for the families and especially the kids who live here at Eastpointe, but the entire community as well. He says the last time there was a homicide in Lake Township was 10 years ago.
These moms are worried because one of the victims who is expected to survive is loved by kids in the neighborhood.
"He really interacted with them and was teaching them all how to play football and was out there with the little ones. So that's really going to impact them," says Maenlen.
