Domestic violence groups sounding an urgent alarm

Posted: Updated:

The tragic shootings in Lake Township, that left the shooter, a young mother, and their son dead is sending shock waves throughout Northwest Ohio.  It's also prompted local domestic violence support groups to remind everyone there is help out there.

"It is an unimaginable tragedy for an abuser to kill a partner," Michelle Clossick, Executive Director of the Cocoon Women's Shelter said.

Clossick says the latest case of domestic violence is nothing short of catastrophic.

"Certainly, in Lake Township, part of the tragedy that the community is just devastated by right now is the amount of people either killed or harmed," Clossick said.

On Tuesday, Police say Jorge Duran Jr. shot his estranged girlfriend, Amber Jones, their son, 3, and 3 others before being gunned down by officers in the parking lot.  Jones, the toddler, and Duran Jr all died.

For Clossick, it is always difficult to hear of such tragedies, but she also uses these cases to emphasize there is help available.

"The most important thing is that those who are being victimized know there is help available," Clossick said.

She says every situation is different but she's urging all women to watch for warning signs, like fear, being threatened, or being kept from family and friends.

And what happened in Lake Township is another tragic reminder that abusive relationships can lead to horrific crimes.
