Over 40 arrested in domestic violence sweep

Posted: Updated:

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office, along with other authorities, conducted their 15th annual domestic violence sweep Wednesday night.

13abc is taking you to the scene as officers track down both men and women wanted on  domestic violence charges. Sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement officials do it every year.

The sheriff laid out the photos Thursday of more than 40 people who were arrested during the sweep.

"We do not want to see anymore victims that are homicide victims. We had the overcast of Lake Township unfortunately shadowing us yesterday," said TPD Detective Mary Jo Jaggers.

Tuesday evening, police say Jorge Duran Jr. shot and killed his estranged girlfriend Amber Jones. He then took their son Jorge Duran III to another apartment where he opened fire again, killing the child.

The 24-year-old was shot and killed by Lake Township police officers when they confronted him outside the apartment.

"You don't take a threat lightly," said domestic violence advocate Augustine Abbott

Augustine Abbott works with domestic violence victim's at Family Services. She says ever nine seconds in the US a woman is beaten in a home.

"Society says 'Oh it's her fault. Why didn't she leave?' It is not that easy. So once we can start to educate the community on what these ladies are going through I think it will help," said Abbott

Authorities say during the sweep Wednesday night some of the suspects tried to run while others didn't put up a fight.
