In two short years, Martin Luther King Junior Academy for Boys has gone from ‘academic emergency' to earning a rating of ‘excellent' from the state.
While the Toledo Public Schools district, as a whole, is in academic watch, somehow the all boys school is thriving.
What's behind the surge in scores? Is it the curriculum, the discipline, the dress code, the school creed? Teachers say it may be all of the above, plus a supportive culture.
"The staff is wonderful, but it takes a lot of patience and drive and a lot of encouragement, and you have to stay after the boys to make them see they can achieve," says 7th grade teacher Taria Blanchard.
The students tend to agree.
"Whenever you need help they are there for you, and they help you get through your problems," says student Genesis Warith.
There is a waiting list at the academy. The school only accepts students who are serious about school work and living by the MLK creed:
"We are boys of destiny. We will become men of distinction. We believe in ourselves. We believe in each other. We believe in Martin Luther King Junior Academy for Boys."
The academy for boys does have a sister school. Ella P. Stewart for Girls also has shown improvement on the state report.
