We continue to follow the deadly shootings in Lake Township Tuesday at Eastpointe on the Mall apartments. Lake Township police have released the names of the three other people hurt in the shooting.

On Tuesday, Jorge Duran Jr., 24, was shot and killed by police after officer say he shot and killed his estranged girlfriend, their son, and wounded three others.  It's a move no officer every wants to make but one that comes with the job.

Lake Township Police Chief, Mark Hummer, says, "tragic loss of life is always hard for us to come to grips with, but we do face it."

The small department of about 20 full and part time officers faced it head on.  At Eastpointe on the Mall, a domestic dispute turned tragic when a mother and son were killed, and three others injured.

"This was the first officer involved shooting for the Lake Township Police Department," Chief Hummer said.

Two officers pulled the triggers, both are on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure.

"Their off initially for 5 days, but its not a punitive thing," Hummer said. "Its a way to start the healing process for them."

The Chief says most officers, regardless of the department, never have to discharge their weapon.  But when they do, and take a life, it can be difficult to deal with.  So, they bring in counselors to help everyone cope.  In fact, on Wednesday, counselors and representatives from the Toledo Police Department came to help.

"Just like the tornado, when we're faced with an adversarial situation we come together and we're one united team," Hummer told 13abc.  "We'll stay together and heal as a group."

Still, he says the scene at Eastpointe on the Mall was horrific, a part of the job that will never get easier.

"The shield is up when we're doing our job, but at the end of the day, when you go home, if it didn't affect you, you wouldn't be human," he said.
