Four Rockets will represent the University of Toledo at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships this weekend at Michigan State. The tournament includes players from 20 NCAA Division I schools and will run from Thursday, Oct. 18 until Monday, Oct. 22.
"This tournament has the best talent in the Midwest region, which includes some top-20 teams and awesome nationally-ranked guys," UT Head Coach Al Wermer said. "In the past, we've had an individual reach the semifinals and a doubles team reach the quarterfinals in this event, and I can tell you that can be some tough sledding."
The action is set to begin at 8 a.m. Thursday beginning with singles qualifying rounds. Three of the four Rockets will compete in this round, including senior Francisco Stuardo, junior Ben Brocker and sophomore Nick Wong. Sophomore Tomas Stillman is slated against Northwestern's Raleigh Smith in the first round of the singles main draw.
Stillman and Wong will pair up in the first round of doubles play as Stuardo and Brocker team up on the other side of the bracket. Both teams will face teams from Northwestern on Friday.
The ITA regional is the third tournament of the fall for the Rockets. Wong led the way at the season-opening Purdue Invite, capturing his first-career singles flight championship against Purdue's Szymon Tatarczyk.
Toledo returned home on Oct. 5 to host the annual Rocket Invitational where Brocker went undefeated. The southpaw is 5-1 in singles matches this fall. Freshman Matt Wareti also recorded two wins in his debut on the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
Two more tournaments remain on the fall docket for Toledo. They will travel to Chicago, IL for the Northwestern Invitational on Oct. 26 and will conclude the fall at the USTA Futures Event in Niceville, FL.
