Senior Kaylin Belair is the Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week following her performance at the Wisconsin Adidas Invite, the league office announced today. With top-runner Mackenzie Chojnacky not at full strength, Belair led No. 20 Toledo with a personal-best time of 20:22 in a meet that featured 20 teams in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.
The Rockets beat seven ranked teams, including No. 9 Vanderbilt, and it was the first time in MAC history that five women ran under 21:00 in the same race.
"This speaks volumes about our depth and our potential," said head coach Kevin Hadsell. "Kaylin really stepped up when we knew Mackenzie wasn't 100 percent. I'm really proud of her and we have huge goals moving forward."
Belair, a native of Monroe MI, finished 40th overall among 327 runners as Toledo tied for 13th place with Yale. She eclipsed her previous 6K record of 21:00 at NCAA championships a year ago, and became the second UT runner to earn the weekly award this season with Chojnacky (twice).
With a few races remaining in her career, Belair is peaking at the right time. Toledo is vying for its third-straight conference title and NCAA championship berth.
Toledo will run part of its team at Eastern Michigan tomorrow, while the top runners prepare for MAC championships on Oct. 27.
