EVENING NEWS HEADLINES - OCTOBER 18. 2012

1. TIGERS WIN

The Detroit Tigers are going to the World Series. The beat the Yankees 8-1 tonight to sweep New York in game four of the American League Championship Series. Detroit either meets San Francisco or St. Louis. It's the first time the Tigers have been in the World Series since 2006.

2. SENATE DEBATE

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown and his Republican challenger Josh Mandel argued over federal bailouts tonight in their second of three debate. Mandel, the 35-year-old state treasurer, called the auto bailout "fiscally irresponsible and morally wrong. Brown criticized Mandel for failing to support the bailout that's connected to 800,000 Ohio jobs.

3. CLINTON AND "THE BOSS"

(AP) - Former President Bill Clinton says Republicans have tried to keep the nation's unemployment rate high for political gain. Campaigning in Ohio for President Barack Obama, Clinton says the GOP was "crushed" when the jobless rate fell to 7.8 percent last month. He spoke at a Parma campaign appearance with rocker Bruce Springsteen.

4. CHUCK BERRY BIRTHDAY

(AP) - Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is honoring rock pioneer Chuck Berry on his birthday. Berry, who celebrated his 86th birthday Thursday, is the subject of a newly opened spotlight series on his life. The exhibit includes stage clothes, a guitar, an original photograph of 3-year-old Chuck Berry and a handbill from a 1961 Jamaica performance.

5. "PERVERSION FILES"

(AP) - An apology has been offered by the Boy Scouts of America for its handling of scoutmasters accused of molesting children. The apology follows today's release of nearly 15,000 pages from the organization's so-called "perversion files" on men suspected of being pedophiles. The documents show that on numerous occasions, local officials helped cover up abuse allegations.

6. SANDUSKY REQUEST

(AP) - Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky wants a judge to overturn his child sexual abuse convictions and give him a new trial. Sandusky claims the defense didn't have enough time to prepare. He was sentenced two weeks ago to 30 to 60 years in prison after being convicted of abusing 10 boys.
