EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Toledo men's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Midwest Regionals yesterday on the campus of Michigan State. The Rockets sent four players to compete and improve against some of the top talent in the country.
"I told the guys we're always pumped up and of course we really want to go deep in this event," head coach Al Wermer said. "However, regional play has never been a valid prelude or predictor of our team-match season."
Francisco Stuardo, a transfer from College of the Desert (CA), notched the only win for the Rockets in his opening singles qualifier match. The senior defeated UIC's Alex Raa 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) in a hard-fought match, advancing to the second round against Wisconsin's Oskar Wikberg. After winning the initial set over Wikberg, 6-2, Stuardo lost momentum and dropped the next two sets 4-6 and 0-6.
Sophomore Tomas Stillman was the lone Rocket to play in the main singles draw, dropping his first-round match to Northwestern's Raleigh Smith by scores of 4-6 and 3-6. Junior Ben Brocker and sophomore Nick Wong were the other two UT players who competed at regionals, dropping each of their singles qualifier matches.
Stillman and Wong lost a heartbreaker in doubles play to Northwestern, 9-8(3), while Brocker and Stuardo teamed up for the other doubles match. They also lost to a Wildcat duo.
Toledo will send its full squad to the Northwestern Invitational next weekend and then travels to the USTA $10,000 Futures Event in Niceville, FL on Nov. 2.
