Parents remember 4-yr-old fire victim as happy sports-loving boy

Posted: Updated:

The parents of four-year-old Taevion Maulsby remember their son as a happy boy who loved sports. His mother Tiffany Dukett says there are no words that can describe her loss.

"I'll miss him playing with my hair when he goes to bed. He's just so full of energy and happiness."

Taevion died of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out Friday inside his aunt's duplex on Vinton Street. Investigators say the fire started in one of the children's bedrooms in the upper unit of the duplex. When crews arrived at the scene, his aunt Jessica Duckett was administering CPR to Taevion and his cousin.

His two-year-old cousin Alyssa Autman remains in serious condition at a local hospital, but is  showing signs of improvement.

Tiffany Dukett is calling his death a tragic accident and leaning on friends and family to help her cope with her grief.

"I just thank everyone for being here, he affected so many people. He was just an angel."

Tiffany is also trying to support her sister Jessica who remains by her own daughter Alyssa's hospital bed.

"I have to be there for my sister. She tried everything she could."

The family is now dealing with funeral arrangements for Taevion. A funeral fund has been set up at Fifth Third Bank.

"I'm going to have him cremated and bring him home," Duckett says. "I want to bring him home where he belongs."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It could take up to a week before an official ruling is made.
