Toledo Public Schools is asking Toledo voters to support Issue 20 on November 6th. The 10-year, 4.9 mill operating levy would generate more than $13 million a year for the district.
TPS Chief Academic Officer, Jim Gault tells 13 ABC, "We've cut $100 million over 3 years and because of that, we've cut programs, transportation, and we've closed buildings as well as taken concessions from our employees. If we have to cut even further we're going to have to let go of staff which is going to increase the size of our classrooms."
Gault says the average teacher to student ratio is one teacher per 25 students. He believes if Issue 20 is voted down, teachers will lose their jobs.
"In order for us to turn around Northwest Ohio,e need a strong education system that protects home values. It will lead to jobs in the future. If we don't have passage of this, we will have to make significant cuts and our system has already been cut to the bone."
TPS leaders hope recent history doesn't repeat itself. In 2010 Toledo voters rejected not one, but two levy requests.
The election also comes on the heels of a disappointing state report card. The district slid from Continuous Improvement rating to Academic Watch.
The levy would cost the average homeowner of a $100,000 home around $150 a year. A big levy push is set for this Saturday morning at 10am. TPS students and leaders will be going door to door.
