Neighbors feel left out of fire station decision

Posted: Updated:

Central Toledo neighbors are concerned about plans to move Fire Station 3 from Bush Street to Jamie Farr Park on Summit Street where a new station would be built on the site of a swimming pool.

Neighbors met at Chapel Hill Apartments to discuss those concerns on Monday evening.

Leonard Gillespie, who lives in the area, says he feels like city leaders are not communicating with the neighbors. He wants the fire station on Bush Street restored.

Fire Chief Luis Santiago says that with today's standards, the 1927 building can't function properly as a fire station.

Neighbor Sandra Kincaid lives within a block of the station. She says if they can't fix the old station they should build a new one on the same site because of the Northgate Apartments for senior citizens located nearby.

"We need them right where they're at. Not at Jamie Farr. We have Northgate right here and they're at Northgate 10 to 15 times a day sometimes and our people need them and our children need them."

Relocating the station to the park means the pool would close permanently. Neighbors say they need the station and kids need the pool, so the City should leave things alone.

Station Three will be one of the topics at Tuesday's City Council Meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend and give their input.
