Honor Flight taking 150 Vietnam veterans to DC

Posted: Updated:

A special Honor Flight takes off Tuesday morning at Toledo Express escorting veterans to tour the war memorials in Washington, D.C.

150 Vietnam veterans are being given a big thank you for their service thanks to a World War II veteran who told his family before he died to sponsor a flight in their honor.

Some of these Vietnam veterans have been on the waiting list for Honor Flight Northwest Ohio since 2008.

The World War II veteran's wish which is coming true today was to pay tribute to those who served in Vietnam, including his own son.

More than 58,000 Americans lost their lives while serving in Vietnam.

This special flight is an add-on to the 2012 schedule.

Honor Flight points out that if you were on the list as a Korean War veteran, you can still get an Honor Flight at the start of the season next year.  This will not impact your place on the waiting list for a trip to Washington to tour the war memorials.

The next Honor Flight is in the spring of 2013.

To date, Honor Flight Northwest Ohio has conducted 27 flights and escorted more than 1,200 veterans to Washington, D.C.
