TPS plans to turn around Glenwood - 13abc.com Toledo (OH) News, Weather and Sports

For 5 consecutive years Glenwood Elementary has been in Academic Emergency, an equivalent to a "F." 

Jennifer Spoores is the Principal. She tells 13abc, "It was expected, unfortunately we knew what we were going into...I think typically when you have many things that happened between the transformation plan, the school improvement grant, full inclusion, you typically do see a setback."

Spoores says last year students were overwhelmed with a new building, new administrators, new teachers, and the new K-8th set up.

She tells 13abc,  "Everyone experiences growing pains when there is change and our growing pains were last year and we have corrected them...students are learning, they are happy when they are here most of the time, things have really turned around for us this year."

So what has changed this year?  Students no longer have to worry about hunger pains in the morning, the district offers free breakfast to K-8th students. Glenwood continues to offers extended day to keep kids in school longer.  

The last 45 minutes of the day is called "bull pup" Academy.  It's a program based on the specific needs of students, to help them get ahead in the classroom.  The focus is reading and math. 

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant says this school will get out of academic emergency soon. He tells 13abc, "we know that with any kind of change from academic emergency and up...you take it in strides so we are looking at 3-5 years and hopefully looking at the leadership under Mrs. spores and Mr. brenneman that you will see this school changed under continuous improvement and hopefully one day be excellent." 

It's a promise to the students and the community who are tired of the struggle and ready for the rewards of success
