Mayor Bell gives pay raises to top administrators

Posted: Updated:

Fifty-five of Mayor Bell's top administrators have been given pay raises after weeks of heated debate with Toledo City Council.

Mayor Bell says those employees haven't received a raise in 14 years, and it was time to give them a salary that could compete with other cities in Ohio. He issued the executive order Tuesday.

The raises are for deputy mayors, directors, commissioners, managers and attorneys. The mayor says, even with the raise, those employees are still 10 to 15 percent behind similar positions in cities like Toledo.

The move will cost the city nearly $300,000.

Some on council agree certain positions deserved raises, but they say the mayor should have waited until the first of the year, instead of making them effective immediately.
