Lourdes Volleyball Preview

Posted: Updated:

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes carries a three-match winning streak into this week's contests  and has won four of its last five overall heading into the second to last week of regular season play.  The Gray Wolves travel to Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday evening for a key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match before entertaining Ohio State-Marion on Saturday in their final non-conference tilt of the year.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his third season on the Lourdes bench, Greg Reitz has a 43-54 (.443) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  In his fifth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 63-89 (.414) career mark.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes and Michigan-Dearborn has split the four meetings the two schools have played dating back to 2010.  Last year the Gray Wolves posted a five-set victory over the Wolves in the final match of the regular season, avenging a five-set loss to UMD during the Michigan-Dearborn Tournament early in 2011.  Lourdes is 1-2 in matches played in Dearborn, Mich.  Lourdes holds a 5-0 all-time advantage against Ohio State-Marion dating back to the 2010 campaign.  The Gray Wolves defeated the Scarlet Wave in straight sets back on Aug. 22 in Marion, Ohio.  The second scheduled meeting, during the Gray Wolf Invitational, was cancelled.  Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Ohio State Marion in Sylvania.

Wrapping Up Last Week: In their lone match last week, Lourdes rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Siena Heights 22-25, 19-25, 25-12, 25-17, 15-12 on Wednesday evening at Tam-o-Shanter.    Ali Mass led the Gray Wolves with 16 kills and 11 digs while Allegra Recknagel had 50 assists and 12 digs.  Alyssa Pelish had a match-high 21 digs.

Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolves have dropped three of their last four matches overall, including two straight, following losses to William Penn and Indiana-East on Saturday.  Tiffany Brufladt leads UMD with 258 kills on the season while Brittany Yanos has 372 digs and 81 blocks.  Emily Tjapkes has a team-high 484 assists on the year while Brittany Yanos has tallied 46 service aces.

Scouting Ohio State-Marion: The Scarlet Wave return to Tam-o-Shanter for the second time this season after participating in the Gray Wolf Invitational earlier this year.  Ohio State Marion is coming off of a straight sets victory over Southern State CC on Oct. 13.

The Conference Race:  Lourdes still has a lot to play for with just two weeks, and three WHAC matches, remaining in the regular season.  The Gray Wolves currently sit in eighth place in the conference standings, with places five through eight hosting nine through 12 in the first round of the WHAC tournament.  The Gray Wolves have a slim one-game lead over ninth place Michigan-Dearborn for the final home slot, with the two schools squaring off on Wednesday night.  In addition, Lourdes is just one game out of seventh place and two out of sixth, so the Gray Wolves can still improve their seeding for the tournament as well.

Looking to Match a School Record Wednesday: Lourdes enters the week riding a three-match winning streak, the longest for the Gray Wolves' since their school-record four-match win streak from Sept. 15-18, 2010.

October Good to the Gray Wolves: After winning just two matches the entire month of September, Lourdes has played much better volleyball in October, winning four of their five matches they have played this month.

Tripling Up Conference Wins: Last year in Lourdes inaugural season in the WHAC the Gray Wolves managed just one conference win all season long.  This year Lourdes has already tripled that victory total with three, and the Gray Wolves still have three more conference matches remaining, including one at home.

A Killer Instinct: Ali Mass tallied a season-high 16 kills for the Gray Wolves in the win against the Siena Heights.  The junior's kill total marked her highest since registering 18 in back-to-back matches against Northwestern Ohio and Rochester during her freshman season in 2010.

Feasting on Siena Heights: Amelia Horton had 10 kills on Wednesday in the victory over Siena Heights, marking just her second double figure kill match of the season.  The other?  A 12-kill performance at Siena Heights back on Aug. 29 which was her career high.  Ironically, the sophomore also had a pair of 10-kill matches during her rookie season, one of which came against Siena Heights.

McKenty Moves Into Third  on Lourdes Single Season Charts: Katie McKenty's 302  kills this season currently rank her third on the school's single season kills chart.  Ali Mass' 372 kills during the inaugural 2010 season is the school record while Brooke Hearn had 313 that same season as well to rank second, 11 kills ahead of McKenty.

A Record-Setting Season: Andrea Brown has set a new Lourdes single season blocking record with 71 this year.  She has shattered the old mark of 50 set by Brooke Hearn and Samantha Stainbrook set during the inaugural 2010 season.

This and That: Lourdes is 7-0 this season when winning set three ... the Gray Wolves are 3-1 in five-set matches ... Allegra Recknagel had a season-high 50 assists against Siena Heights ... Saturday's match against Ohio State-Marion is a fund-raising match for the American Heart Association ... Lourdes will honor its two seniors prior to the Oct. 31 contest against Davenport.
