A seemingly quiet race in Lucas County has heated up in the last 24 hours, and no one's taking responsibility. It all centers around a post card that questions whether or not a candidate for Lucas County Recorder has his GED.
That card says Toledo City Councilman Phil Copeland did not graduate high school and does not have his GED. It asks if he's qualified to be recorder.
Councilman George Sarantou, the Republican in the Recorder race, held a news conference Wednesday to say that neither he, nor his camp, nor the Lucas County Republican party sent it out. Sarantou calls it dirty politics.
"I'm outraged by it. This is gutter politics, this is dirty politics. It has no place in a campaign and I want this to stop," said Sarantou.
13abc checked in with Copeland and he showed us documentation that shows he has earned his GED. He didn't know about the post card or the press conference. Copeland told us that it doesn't even make sense to lie about this because it's so easily checked. It's not so much the press conference that upsets Copeland, it's the lying.
"It's just terrible, if he did it. I don't know whether he did it or not, but to get to that point. To lie, the main thing. Meddling in someone's business is a different story if it's true, but to lie, to tell a lie whoever did it it's sad. I just think it's sad," said Copeland.
So who ultimately sent it out? No one 13abc could find knows.
