EVENING NEWS HEADLINES - OCTOBER 24, 2012

1. CAR BREAK-INS

Authorities are investigating a rash of car break-ins in Carroll Township. The police chief says about 40 to 50 cars were broken into from Monday night to Tuesday morning. The robbers took change out of cars, CPS units, an expensive camera and even a crossbow. All of the cars that were broken into were unlocked.

2. PROVISIONAL BALLOTS

(AP) - A federal judge has granted a request by a group of voter advocates to expand the conditions under which provisional ballots are counted in Ohio. U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley ruled today that provisional ballots cast not just in the wrong precinct but in the wrong polling location altogether must still be counted.

3. SPORTS TALK HOST SUSPENDED

(AP) - A Columbus sports talk-show host who was suspended after he tweeted he wished ESPN's Desmond Howard would get fired or die has been dismissed by his station. WBNS 97.1 The Fan, an ESPN affiliate and the flagship station for Ohio State athletics, posted the news of Scott Torgerson's firing via Twitter.

4. OHIO COLLEGE TUITION

(AP) - A new report from the College Board says annual in-state tuition at Ohio's public universities increased an average of just 3 percent over the past five years. That's the second lowest increase in the country, but Ohio students are still paying about 6 percent more than the national average.

5. CONTROVERSIAL RAPE COMMENT

(AP) - Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock has put his GOP colleagues in an awkward spot after saying that rape resulting in pregnancy is "something God intended." With female voters critical in the tight presidential race, many in the party distanced themselves with varying levels of abruptness and clarity. Mitt Romney's campaign said the he disagrees with Mourdock's remarks but still backs him.

6. COLON CANCER AND ASPIRIN

(AP) - Researchers say aspirin shows promise in treating colon cancer in people with mutations in a gene that's thought to play a role in the disease. A study shows that among patients with the mutations, those who took aspirin lived longer than those who didn't. It made no difference in people without the mutation.
