Local girl, 7, saves sister's life

Lindsay Miller and her husband are more than proud of their two oldest daughters, Victoria, 5, and Mallory, 7.  Just one day after being trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver, a scary moment with their other sister, Emily, 3, put them to the test.

"She was on her hands and knees and was, like, choking so I went over to get the gum out," Mallory said.  "I went and started pushing on her back."

Emily has cerebral palsy and recently had problems with choking.  It was after a particularly bad episode that the Millers decided to take a class, just in case, and it paid off.

"I was just overwhelmed with emotion," Lindsay Miller, the girls' mother said.  "I couldn't believe she knew what to do.  They both proved they were paying attention and saved her."

Mallory says she's glad she could help her sister, but it was moment she and her parents won't ever forget.

"I was nervous and scared at the same time," Mallory said.

"I was actually terrified," Lindsay told 13abc.

Now they want to use this experience to show others the importance of learning CPR and the Heimlich.

"I don't want to sound dramatic, but its a matter of life and death," Lindsay said. "I've never looked at it in that perspective until I saw my 7-year-old save her sister."

The Cygnet Fire Department is planning a community CPR training class.  Its set for November 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Cygnet Fire Station.
