More than 3 dozen car break-ins in Carroll Twp.

Posted: Updated:

Don Palmerton is one of the lucky ones who lives along Lake Erie near Hollywood and California.  "I was walking my dog when went past my car and all my stuff was missing out of the glove compartment, everything was laying on the seat," says Palmerton.  Someone went into his unlocked car, but thankfully, there were no valuables inside.

"We never would leave either one of em locked," he comments, referring to his Ranger truck and Ford Focus.  "We've never had problems you know? But now, we're going to leave them locked."

Across town, police chief Jody Hatfield is still surprised at the recent burglaries.  "I've been here since '96, we've never seen anything like this with vehicles being broken into," says Hatfield.

Carroll Township police are investigating more than three dozen car burglaries along State Route Two.  The robber or robbers hit up mostly residential areas in a three mile stretch, taking everything from loose change to GPS units.  He says they put their hands on anything that could turn into quick cash.  Police recovered some items like purses along the route.

"Right now, with the way we're looking and the areas that were targeted, they had to know the area a little bit," Hatfield told 13abc.

"Make sure your vehicles are locked," he recommends. "Make sure your windows are up, don't leave anything valuable in there, take it indoors with you. Make sure your home is secure. That's the best thing we can tell everyone to do"

Police suspect the robber knows the area well, and already have some leads.  For now it's a lesson for neighbors to lock up and stay smart.

"We're a small community but we're not exempt from today's crimes," said Chief Hatfield.

Don Palmerton says from now on, the doors stay locked on his car at all times. "I'm not worried about the house, but we're going to keep the car and truck locked."

If you noticed someone went into your car, even if nothing was stolen, please contact police.  Also, if you noticed something suspicious the night of Monday, October 22 going into Tuesday, October 24, please contact Carroll Township Police at 419-898-4906.
