Smoke filled the air over north Toledo this morning, and an orange glow lit up the sky, as fire crews worked to extinguish what they called a "stubborn fire" at a recycling yard.
Someone noticed the flames at Stickney Recycling shortly after 5 a.m. They were burning beneath piles of construction materials at a privately-owned site that accepts roofing materials, tires and asbestos. The owner of the company tells Toledo firefighters the asbestos is buried in a pile adjacent to the basin that caught fire, and poses no risk to the community. Smoke made its way north toward the state line, passing over several neighborhoods, but no evacuations were ordered.
Firefighters called in the Environmental Protection Agency over concerns of runoff into a nearby creek. They also had concerns about water pressure because only one hydrant was available in this industrial area of Toledo, not far from the Chrysler Complex.
City crews brought in heavy equipment in an attempt to dig through the piles and keep the fire from spreading, but they never got that far. A spokesperson for Toledo Fire said the basin filled with debris was simply too deep to dig through. She added it's possible underground dirt barriers may keep the smoldering remains from spreading.
No one was hurt. Investigators are still looking into what may have caused the fire.
