A year after being walloped by Hurricane Irene, residents rushed to put away boats, harvest crops and sandbag boardwalks, bracing for a rare megastorm that could cause greater havoc.

Some have described it as a "super storm" and its heading straight for the east coast.  Hurricane Sandy is currently a category 1 storm.  Storm centers predict her slow speed and size is enough to make a significant impact.

"This is the worst timing for a storm.  You have fall and there's a lot of loose branches, so the storm itself will be bad," New Jersey Mayor, Cory Booker said. "But I worry about the aftermath.  People being caught without power, but we have the plywood ready and have the sandbags ready."

That's why local disaster response teams are mobilizing.

"If everything on the reports that I'm seeing say this could be very devastating," Todd James, Executive Director of the Hancock County Red Cross said.

This will be James' first experience with a hurricane.  Saturday he's flying to Philadelphia where he'll help get information about shelters and evacuations to residents.

"If and when it [Hurricane Sandy] meets with the fronts moving it, it could create some dangerous hazardous conditions, possibly widespread flooding and power outages," James said.

He will spend about a week along the coast and eventually expects to be joined by even more local volunteers.

He says, "we've already had several of our volunteers who have gotten the call to say we may need your help, so be ready to roll at a moments notice."

Because once the wind kicks up and the storm surge moves in, it will be all hands on deck to keep all of the residents safe.

If you want to help, James says the best way is to donate.
